INQUE magazine launches ten year print odyssey

    November 28, 2021 /

It was in summer 2020 when INQUE Magazine landed on my radar via Kickstarter. A fresh new take on the magazine format, INQUE aims to release one issue a year for ten years and then stop. INQUE comes from the minds of Matt Willey (previous The New York Times magazine art director and current Pentagram partner) and Dan Crowe (founding editor of multiple magazines such as Port, Avaunt, Zembla and Butterfly). The two of them have multiple awards and credits behind them; their work together on Port and Avaunt was a triumph both editorially and as stand-outs on the shelves. Although Avaunt is no longer in print, Port’s recent re-design…

Kinfolk celebrates 10 years in print

    September 28, 2021 /

“A decade ago, the very first issue of Kinfolk made its way into print,” the Kinfolk website reads. “To celebrate this milestone—our tenth anniversary—we’ve refreshed the design of the magazine and aptly turned our gaze toward one of life’s deepest and most searching subjects: the future.” The reshaped 10th anniversary issue 40 drives forward Kinfolk’s energy into a new era, from the cover inwards. An explosion of colour via the photography of the special edition cover (one of two) leans into a new aesthetic, one that after seeing issue 41, works upon vertical lines through composition and movement.  Drawing upon a plethora of creatives in the talent agency world, photography,…

Retrospective: Total Armageddon by Slanted Publishers

    September 12, 2021 /

Established in 2004 as a typographic and layout focused web blog, Germany’s Slanted Publishers have since grown into a well-established magazine within the design industry, covering everything from illustration, graphic design, photography and of course, typography. Running consecutively online and as a beautiful print journal, it’s a must read for any designer wishing to gain new perspectives. “A publication for our loyal friends and also new design enthusiasts alike.” Slanted Publishers Their bumper issues (you’ll need some extra room on your shelf!) focus on a different city each issue, and delve into unexplored design hubs across the world. From their latest ‘Prague’ release this month (which I’m eagerly awaiting to…

On The Overleaf Shelf: September 2021

    September 6, 2021 /

The first edition of “On the Overleaf shelf” features a range of limited edition risograph magazines published in Helsinki, to a brand new re-design of a beloved classic hailing from the BFI. It’s been a crazy summer for publishing, with some popular titles leaving us (‘Scoop’) whilst others thrive with early editions selling out in record time. I’ll cover the ‘Scoop’ story in another article but here’s what I’ve been buying over the summer period. Main blog image credit: Pentagram 1. LogoArchive Extra Edition ‘pLAY’ Since its hugely popular ‘Akogare’ edition (which won a D&D Award), LogoArchive have been keeping us on our toes with new extra edition ‘pLAy,’ a…

The magazines we lost in 2020

    February 3, 2021 /

As the pandemic continues to cause countless casualties across multiple industries, we look back at the printed world and the magazines we lost in 2020. It’s been a tough time for printed publications; not only has Covid limited advertising partnerships and sales but they’re also feeling the impact of Brexit – causing exports to Europe to slow or close. The lack of advertising revenue plus the added pressure of Brexit has left an indelible mark, causing the loss of some of our most loved and heritage titles in its wake. We look back on the magazines we lost in 2020, revisiting some of the popular titles that won’t grace the…

Weapons of Reason release hardback compendium of the world’s most pressing challenges

    January 20, 2021 /

It’s been a short but sweet journey for Weapons of Reason, a publication first published in 2015 by London-based design agency Human After All. Eight issues later (the eighth and final issue in the series ‘War Games’ is out now) sees Human After All devise a comprehensive and thought-provoking “best of” collection within the medium of a hardback book. Successfully funded via crowd-funding platform Kickstarter, Weapons of Reason – the hardback edition saw 1,067 backers pledge £27,825 to bring the edition to print. Published in early December 2020, the beautifully bound edition weighs in at 255 pages long and a highly produced finish. The overall quality is superb and is…

Delicate Rébellion’s ‘The (Un)Influenced issue’ pays homage to creatives during these turbulent times

    January 20, 2021 /

Issue 2 of art and culture showcase Delicate Rébellion (DR) arrives out of the packaging with the back cover facing. Its monogram spot-varnished with a message printed on top reading “oh hey you, The world is a little wild right now, but please never underestimate yourself. Keep going. Keep going. Good things will come. Love love. X” This message for turbulent times by creator Hannah Taylor sets the tone for the rest of the magazine, a personal journey through creativity for the reader. With so much negativity on a daily basis during the current climate, DR offers a shining light in the darkness. Turning over to the front cover which…
