Meet Kaapelitehdas, Finland’s largest culture centre
Nestled within Helsinki’s West Harbour lies a huge cultural complex named ‘Kaapelitehtaan Konttori’ or ‘The Cable Factory’. At 62,000 m2 in size, it is Finland’s largest culture centre - but intriguingly, the scale of the building is the only one of the impressive features of this incredible building.

Solomiya magazine hosts Berlin pop-up exhibition
Self-published magazine ‘soлomiya’ (“solomiya” as per Instagram tag) is hosting a pop-up exhibition in Berlin this summer. It finishes August 15th - be quick! Held at cultural platform and project space feldfünf in Berlin, Germany - soлomiya is showcased within the space so viewers can read the stories held within its pages.

Stack to host Mother Tongue and Kindling joint event this July
Magazine subscription service (and now book club) Stack magazines are hosting an event in London this July, hosting two popular indie titles on the night. Taking place on the 6th of July at The Book Club in Shoreditch, the event will see Mother Tongue and Kindling join forces to discuss “rethinking the family.” Named ‘Beyond the Nuclear Family’, this new event follows Stack’s Independent Magazine Fair in May. The topic looks to discuss, “what does it mean to have a family today?”

Isolarii releases Ukraine war focused issue seven ‘In The Face of War’
Isolarii have unveiled their brand new, seventh publication ‘IN THE FACE OF WAR’. The new issue sits alongside the exhibition, “This is Ukraine: Defending Freedom.” As part of the Venice Biennale, the exhibition was produced in partnership with the Office of the President of Ukraine and curated by isolarii subscriber Björn Geldhof. Scandinavian MIND issue three enters the metaverse
Sweden’s own Scandinavian MIND is a “magazine and a platform covering the intersection of lifestyle and technology,” the publication notes on their website. “We believe that convergence of different fields is the way forward for technology, fashion, design, mobility, entertainment, gaming, and other industries.” On a mission to highlight people, projects, places and products that impact the world in a positive way, Scandinavian MIND is a driving force that combines engaging storytelling through a selection of written and multimedia methods - photography, film and audio to name a few.

St Bride Foundation hosts Holly Catford and friends this June
St Bride Foundation is set to host Holly Catford and friends on the 16th June. The 126 year old grade II listed building in London will play host to the lecture, held in person and online via Zoom. ‘Team work makes the dream work: Making magazines with Holly Catford and friends’ will see magazine maker Holly bring us on a “journey into the world of editorial design and visual collaboration,” the event listing notes. “Magazines are always a team effort and her ethos is that ‘everything I do is better when I work with other people’.”

Berlin’s Nobody magazine issue one finds beauty in the everyday
Nobody is a Berlin-based biannual print magazine about people, their stories, places, and much more. Their press release notes, “we reach beyond the headlines to publish reported longform writing, photo series, illustrated memoir, and other experiments in voice.” Nobody issue one pierces the veil of the everyday and invites us into the world of the undiscovered, unheard and the unrelenting. Created by two writers (and best friends) Sami and Tessa, Nobody derives its mission from becoming “frustrated with the homogenization and “clickbatey” nature of mainstream media,” they write. “[This] has created an environment where creativity and experimentation are almost impossible.”

MagCulture Live returns to New York this May
magCulture Live is returning to New York on 22nd May 2022. The highly anticipated independent magazine event is set to be the first in-real-life (IRL) event since November 2021 for the legendary London magazine store, podcast and consultancy (plus much more). The “celebration of the culture of magazines” is set to take place at Ace Hotel Brooklyn in New York, a beautiful and boutique location for the event. Originally held annually in London since 2013 and named ‘ModMag’, the event looks to drive the conversation about magazines and the print industry.

Fukt magazine features in Berlin’s Beyond Drawing exhibition
Contemporary drawing magazine Fukt features in a brand new exhibition named “Über die Zeichnung hinaus” or “Beyond Drawing”. Starting 7th May and running until 21st August, the exhibition is held at the Zentrum für Aktuelle Kunst in Berlin, Germany. Featuring over 40 artists and drawing initiatives, independent publication Fukt showcases all 20 issues of their magazine in the showcase. This is a great opportunity to view the history of the magazine, but also view (by extension) the founder’s artistic practices.

Stack to host Independent Magazine Fair in London this May
Stack has announced a brand new in-person event for May. Held at Maslow’s Mortimer House in London, UK, the Independent Magazine Fair is a free one day event to be held on the 14th May 2022. It’ll feature a series of panel discussions throughout the day, including ‘How to make a magazine’ with Delayed Gratification, The Modernist and Season Zine. Celebrating some of the best-of-British publications, this event will also feature panels such as ‘Breaking the Rules’ including A Profound Waste of Time, Paperboy and Real Review, plus ‘Publishing With Purpose’ including Azeema, It's Freezing in LA! And The Movement Movement.
