Weird Walk Editions release new zine Cromlech

Weird Walk Editions have expanded their zine titles in recent years. The popular imprint has seen the likes of Magic Circle, Leyline, Ritual and Peasant released as zine titles. Their latest, Cromlech, is a new undertaking that is “a deep dive into The Devil’s Den, our favourite ancient monument,” they note on the Weird Walk webshop.

In this new 32 page exploration, Cromlech zine is a guide to the folklore around The Devil’s Den, explaining that “there is power in the stones!” As described on the Pembrokeshire website, they note a Cromlech (or Dolmen) as “an ancient underground tomb typically built with several large upright stones and a cap stone on top. In its day, the whole thing would have been covered by a mound of earth, but today, all the stones are exposed for us to see, touch and walk around.”

The A5 size’s design is similar in format to their Weird Walk zines (issue five was featured previously in 2022), with yellow backgrounds, clean typography and a variety of imagery. The cover itself looks to resemble a sunset with a silhouetted photograph of the stones upon the vibrant gradient in the sky. It’s overlaid with the yellow logo for the name Cromlech and a replicated yellow to red gradient expanding across the page – adding to the time of day.

Cromlech zine also features a range of images and new words from Weird Walk alongside a “feverish, and previously unpublished, account of a 1938 trip to the site by the brilliant artist Denis Grant King,” they note on Instagram. King was a “draftsman working alongside noted archaeologist Stuart Piggott.” The site itself is off the beaten track near to Fyfield Down in the UK and is a curious monument with no signposting, according to Hidden Wiltshire. A chance to dust off those hiking boots.

Weird Walk are also hosting “Samhain Ritual”, an event headlined by Daisy Rickman, featuring performances from Boss Morris and more acts to be announced. Presented by comedian and folklore enthusiast Stewart Lee, the ritual will be held at EartH Theatre in Hackney on Tuesday 29th October 2024 with tickets available via Dice.
