Delayed Gratification to host magazine launch online masterclass

Slow journalism magazine Delayed Gratification have announced an online masterclass this December. The class, ‘How to launch an independent magazine’ will be held on Zoom between 6pm and 8:30pm on Thursday 8th December 2022. Having just released issue 47 for the period of April to June of this year, they’ve also had success with the summer release of a hardback book named ‘An Answer for Everything’. Their award-winning magazine is just one of the achievements Delayed Gratification have under their belts and their masterclasses are no different.

The masterclass will “teach you everything you need to launch an independent publication,” the team wrote on the event page. This will include learning how to turn a magazine idea into reality, how to identify a successful editorial niche, understanding the nuts and bolts of commissioning writers and designers but also how to pull together a winning subscription, distribution and marketing plan. They’ll also dive into budgeting for the first issue, surviving and thriving following the first year but also provide a strong insight into the independent publishing industry. The team will even send a directory of useful companies and contacts after the class – an invaluable set of mentors waiting to help.

11 years after its launch, the founders of Delayed Gratification are ready to share their tips and tricks. “In January 2011 Rob Orchard co-launched Delayed Gratification, a quarterly news magazine that returns to big events after the dust has settled. He’s condensed 12 years of the lessons he and his co-editor Marcus Webb have learned into this tip-filled course.” The course will hold a maximum of 15 participants and there is an “additional benefit” of potentially forming a group afterwards for help and support following the class – meaning you’ll have a network of people to stay in touch with.

As noted on the event page, tickets for the class cost £36 (including VAT) for subscribers and £60 (including VAT) for non-subscribers. You can purchase a ticket via their website here.
